Only 9 Days until MPACT JOBFAIR, yet still time to spruce up resume

Sunday, July 08, 2007
Top 5 Mistakes Candidates Make at the MPACT JOBFAIR
1-Did not bring enough resumes. Recommended to bring at least 20-40 resumes.
2-Arrive in too casual attire. Being too casual can be construed as lack of interest or ambition to attain the job. Suit and tie recommended.
3-Only meet with employers who market to consumers. While lines form for Miller, Goodyear, many times candidates will walk past Degussa Stockhausen and other companies whose names are not commonly known. Recommended to talk to all exhibitors at the MPACT JobFair.
4- Arrive too late to spend quality time with employers. The MPACT JobFair starts at 4pm and goes until 7pm. Recommended to arrive at 3:30 pm to meet with employers while fresh.
5-Expect employers to call them. Over 800 candidates are anticipated to attend this event. Each candidate should take it upon themselves to pursue opportunities by persistently following up with desired employers.

Tips for employers for upcoming MPACT Skilled Maintenance JobFair

Employers are asked to arrive by 3pm to set up their table.
Also encouraged to bring one or 2 employees. By having one staff member to serve as a greeter to collect resumes allows others to serve as talent evaluators and or schedulers to set up follow up interviews.

Why is the maintenance field so much in demand?
Think you’re smarter than a maintenance technician?
By Joel Leonard
Skilled maintenance technicians are a rare and desired group, and their average compensation package is rising. These "grease monkeys" are smarter than you think.
Looking for a job? Have you decided on a career path?
Want to pursue a career that:
Has large growth potential
Is vital to the economy
Has significant compensation potential
Is challenging and satisfying
Involves new technology
Has high corporate visibility
Will be experiencing high demand
Have you considered becoming a maintenance technician?
Future generations will quickly learn that our overabundant supplies of accountants, computer programmers and lawyers are driving down the wages of these professions, meanwhile, skilled labor compensation continues to rise.
Despite exportation of U.S. jobs, maintenance technicians have numerous options available here. Many employers complain of a severe shortage of skilled talent. Mechanics and technicians rank No. 3 and No. 4 on the list of hardest to fill jobs, according to a 2007 manpower survey. That demand is driving up maintenance salaries. Nationwide, the average maintenance technician’s salary has grown to more than $56,000 per year. With overtime, many technicians earn close to six figures.
Companies that would love to expand are frustrated by an education system that doesn’t produce the necessary number of students with appropriate skill sets or the attitude necessary to attain needed skill sets. Many complain that our society’s view of the maintenance of yesterday hasn’t caught up with the realities of today, and as a result, business growth is stalled. With the pending retirement of so many baby boomers, that’s particularly troubling.
Despite negative perceptions, maintenance technicians are no longer just “grease monkeys” performing menial tasks. Companies now not only need technicians to perform maintenance on mechanical systems, but also electrical and electronic systems and microprocessor-based PLCs while tracking their activities using a computerized maintenance management system. Also, companies need technicians who are savvy with predictive maintenance technologies like vibration analysis, ultrasonic leak detection and infrared thermography.
As companies continue to cut back on operators by purchasing highly sophisticated automation, these systems require more care and attention. Even if plants enjoy a net reduction in labor, they need to grow the maintenance staff to keep equipment operating at optimal levels.
Poor maintenance contributed to many of the nation’s recent disasters including the BP pipeline leaks in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, the loss of 15 BP workers’ lives, the mass power outage of the Northeast, the Walter Reed black mold and, most recently, the salmonella outbreak in peanut butter that was determined to be caused by a leaky roof and faulty water sprinkler system. The ConAgra production facility will be closed until August to perform maintenance repairs.
With the importance of proper maintenance now hitting the headlines, to avoid bad publicity and potential lawsuits, more companies are beginning to work down chronic deferred maintenance backlogs and invest more in maintenance development. Therefore, these jobs will continue to grow in importance, stature, wages and volume.
Business and government leaders need to remember as they strive to fund bleeding-edge ideas to get cutting-edge results and competitive advantages in a global marketplace, that we also must polish the rusty edge of business. In other words, we can’t forget to perform proper maintenance of the hydraulic, electronic and electrical systems that sustain us today, as we strive to develop biotech and nanotech solutions for tomorrow.
Nowadays, just to keep up with the advances and changes in the economy, you have to be pretty smart to be smarter than a professional maintenance technician.

Joel,
Thank you so much for inviting Key Resources to exhibit at the MPACT Job Fair on July 20th. The accommodations were gracious, the organization was tight, and the turnout was fantastic. We received 100’s of resumes from candidates in a wide variety of fields. Those were copied and given to our recruiting team in both our Winston-Salem and Greensboro offices the next morning. Those candidates whose resumes matched open job orders are being contacted for interviews.
Thanks again and best wishes to the mighty MPACT team!

Good Morning, Joel.
All I can say is WOW !
What an incredible Job Fair last night. I have been an HR professional for over 20 years, and I was really impressed with the quality, preparedness and professionalism of the candidates you provided. I came home with more (suitable) resumes than I ever have before.
You have done an incredible job and I really appreciate all the work you, and your team, must have put in, in order to produce such a wonderfully professional outcome.
As you well know, the Triad is in dire need of skilled labor, both mechanical and electronical. My manufacturing facility of over 700 people struggle to find people with the skills to keep us running, 24/7.
Tyco Electronics is the worlds largest producer of electrical and electronic connectors and we have a large presence in the Triad area. We are a wonderful company with good salaries and outstanding benefits. You have done my company, and more importantly, the folks in the Triad area, a huge service.
Count me in on all your future Job Fairs!
Gratefully,
Deb

More Tips for MPACT JobFair attendees

Looking for Mr. Goodjob
Article from PlantServices.com
By Joel Leonard
A job fair is a terrific tool to help companies that are struggling to find qualified talent for skilled positions. Recently, I organized the MPACT Skilled Maintenance and Facilities Engineering Job Fair, held January 5 in a 20,000-sq.ft. facility in Greensboro, N.C. The turnout exceeded the expectations of the employers as well as the potential employees.
Several employers were asked to visit the line of candidates that snaked through the parking lot for the three-hour job fair. The employers collected their resumes. Many candidates met with three to five employers before even getting to our door.
“We have never participated in a job fair with so many qualified candidates,” says Roger Tee of UNICCO Corp.
“I am not easily impressed with job fairs in general but, MPACT’s job fair was well organized and well attended with a diverse crowd of people. Even our personnel representative, Ann Lupton, had not seen a job fair turnout like MPACT’s for many years,” says Tony Fisher, facilities director of Boddie Noell.
More than three dozen companies participated, including Miller Brewing, Merck, UNIFI, Metzler Automotive, Reagan, Dulles and BWI Airports, Loxcreen, National Textiles, EPES Transportation, ITT, GKN Driveline, Boddie Noell, Dart Container, AFG Wipes, Degussa Stockhausen, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, UNICCO and Bridgestone Firestone. These companies were seeking to fill more than 350 positions in skilled maintenance and facilities engineering. Hourly positions averaged from $17 to $25 per hour.
“The great attendance from both employers and potential employees highlights the need for both groups to place greater emphasis on maintenance and reliability training,” says Rob Bencini, director, Guilford County Community and Economic Development.
The outpouring of support was phenomenal. This area of the country has been hit hard by factory closings. I’ve received reports that several follow-up interviews have been conducted and that several job offers have been extended.
The event also received extensive support from local and statewide media via television, radio and newsprint coverage. Also the North Carolina Department of Labor, North Carolina Workforce Development, Job Link Centers, VFW Posts, Chamber of Commerce Centers, and the Governor’s Rapid Response team notified employers, displaced workers, veterans, Katrina victims, and even laid off Northwest Airlines workers of the event.
Most importantly, the feedback from the job seekers was gratifying. Michael Holliman, who drove 10 hours from Detroit to attend the event, says, “I have been contacted by several of the companies that were there and one has offered me employment in the Greensboro area.”
The successful job fair inspired me to develop a list of the top 13 lucky qualities to land a job in skilled maintenance and facilities engineering:
Be poor: Set high goals for yourself. Don't be satisfied with what you have. Strive for more.
Be hungry: Be willing to do what ever it takes to get the job ethically.
Be internally driven: Employers love to hire poor, hungry, and driven (PHD) talent because they’re internally motivated, self-correcting and strive for high standards. They can see the energy and enthusiasm in the interview.
Be knowledgeable: Research the employers in advance by visiting their Web sites. Find out what types of equipment the employers use. Learn what type of manufacturing processes they employ. Determine what challenges the employers face.
Be the answer: Think about what transferable skills you have to offer. Begin thinking about how you can help solve their problems. Invest in yourself. Take classes at technical schools and pursue certifications.
Be confident: All they can do is to tell you no – so go for it. Be willing to talk to the employers and to listen to what they say and don't say.
Be service-driven: Focus on what you can do for them and not what they can do for you.
Be enthusiastic: Believe in your product. If you don't believe in yourself, no one else will. Be able to talk in depth about your credentials, training, work experiences and other information that demonstrates your value to help them advance their business.
Be charming: Explain to the employer why you would like to work for them.
Be flexible: Be willing to consider multiple shifts, commuting or relocating for the right opportunity. Be willing to start at the bottom and work your way up.
Be positive: Dress for success and focus on positive outcomes. Know your stuff and don't whine about “wouldas, shouldas, couldas.”
Be connected: Attend job fairs and join professional organizations. The Web sites of the three largest engineering/management organizations are: www.afe.org, www.boma.org and www.ifma.org. Work to become an officer of an organization.
Be persistent: Many times, the job goes to the one who wants it the most, so never give up.
There will be another job fair from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday, July 20, MPACT Learning Center, LLC, 2 Centerview Drive, Greensboro, N.C. Advance registration is not necessary and there will be 25-40 employers represented. Employers wanting a booth at the event should contact me at the address below.

What makes the MPACT JobFair Different?

Origin of MPACT JobFair
The MPACT JobFair was created because of a July 4th, 2005 news report stating that the Triad area lost over 5,600 jobs from January to July of that year. At MPACT, we encountered numerous companies that stated that they were frustrated with the quality of applicants for their high paying Skilled Maintenance jobs. Many stated they needed to begin restocking their workforce to be ready for pending retirements of the baby boomer generation.
We realized that we could no longer sit on the sideline and watch. Therefore on July 20th, 2005 MPACT hosted the first ever Skilled Maintenance/Facilities Engineering Job Fair. In just 3 weeks we uncovered 22 participating companies looking to fill more than 110 jobs paying from $15-$25/hour.
Then on January 5th, 2006, MPACT hosted another job fair that 36 employers attended. They were looking to fill over 340 jobs in the Skilled Maintenance/Facilities Engineering profession. For example, Washington/Dulles and Reagan National Airports offered $2500 signing bonuses for qualified applicants willing to relocate.
Many attendees and employers stated that the MPACT JobFair is not your normal job fair.
Below are some of the reasons why the MPACT JOBFAIR is different:
- MPACT JobFairs are held at a technical training center in a variety of small rooms with sample technical equipment on display.
- MPACT JobFairs are easy for employers to participate. Tabletops are FREE and the event runs from 4 -7 p.m. Employers can still address needs at work and then attend the Jobfair.
- MPACT JobFairs focus only on skilled maintenance and facilities engineering positions.
- The Jobfair sets up a "Treasure Hunt" environment for attendees. You have to wander through our facility to find all the employers you want to meet. MPACT does not publish a directory or map of employers. Why? We realize there is may be concern over applicants prejudging employers and only visiting employers that they knew their business names-meanwhile industrial or regional based companies who compensate equal if not better wages are overlooked.
- Only a few temporary agencies are invited to participate at MPACT JobFairs. At most public job fairs, candidates only have a few real employers to speak to while the majority of exhibitors represent temporary agencies. At the MPACT JobFair, the majority of exhibitors are actual employers.
- MPACT serves as a Job Clearinghouse. During the MPACT Jobfair, candidates are asked to provide a resume to MPACT. After the event, MPACT shares the resumes with employers who could not attend. Over 40 companies have received the MPACT JobFair resumes and numerous positions have been filled.
- MPACT JobFairs generate results. Employers have been escatic about the quality of attendees of the MPACT JobFair. Conservative estimates over 200 jobs have been filled as a result of the MPACT JobFair
- MPACT Offers the MPACT JobFairs as a community service. MPACT does not generate any revenues from employers or candidates.
